Based in Lusaka, Zambia, Lusaka International Community School (LICS) is a co-educational, secular, fee-paying, non-profit school, which provides an internationally recognised education to a culturally diverse, globally-minded student body in a caring and supportive learning environment. LICS is a leading independent pre-primary, primary, and secondary school based in the leafy suburb of Roma in Lusaka, Zambia. It is also a member of CIS, AISA, and ISAZ.

The school currently has an opening and is looking for a suitably qualified individual to join the LICS community as a Student Support Services, Assistant Teacher on a temporal basis.

1. Requirements

  • Know subject and curriculum content and how to teach it

2. Qualifications and experience

  • A Diploma in Education at the Primary level or equivalent.
  • Proven ability and experience in supporting the teaching and planning for individuals or small groups across the primary school age range 
  • Excellent English language reading and writing skills
  • IT literacy, knowledge, and experience of Microsoft Office suite Pro.
  • Experience with the Cambridge Primary Curriculum is preferable 
  • Knowledge of a range of digital tools and apps that support the development of literacy and numeracy, or key skills is desirable.
  • To have an understanding of diagnostic assessments and processes to identify special educational needs.

3. Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Academic
  • To assist in planning, preparation, and feedback with the class teacher.
  • Be actively involved in the planning; suggesting ideas and strategies for upcoming units/topics.
  • Engage with and understand the daily/weekly plans.
  • Ensure resources and materials are prepared for the lessons planned.
  • Be actively engaged in teaching and learning at all times.
  • Reinforce the learning objective through specific questioning and demonstration techniques.
  • Focus on task understanding and not the completion.
  • Develop a good understanding of special educational needs.
  • Carry out administrative tasks to support the learning of individuals or groups of children: displays, photocopying, laminating, etc.
  • Mark the learner’s work and provide positive feedback.
  • Engage in team teaching, as appropriate
  • Discuss academic concerns immediately with the class teacher/ Head of SSS
  • Be involved in progress meetings, as appropriate.
  • Teach individuals, and small groups, and support learners as needs arise.
  • Use collaborative talk and model expectations and high standards.
  • Take the initiative to 
  • Support, scaffold, and or extend as required
  • Provide verbal feedback
  • Use practical apparatus, pictures, displays drawings, etc. to support and develop an understanding
  • Make games/resources for the classroom
  • Use planning and preparation time effectively to support individuals’ needs (planning lessons, preparing materials, communicating, and collaborating).
    • Pastoral
  • Walk learners, in an orderly manner, to and from specialist lessons, ensuring children are quiet. 
  • Implement rewards and sanctions as stated in the behaviour policy.
  • Carry out duties as timetabled.
  • Display professionalism at all times.
  • To discuss concerns regarding a learner immediately (emotional and /or social).
  • To have read and understood the child protection policy and report any concerns immediately to the child protection officer.
